The ground in and around Anahuac

The land around Anahuac is delta and coastal marsh transitioning into prairie. Elevation is minimal, the water table is high, and the area includes substantial protected wetland, including the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge to the south and east. Cattle and rice have been the historic land uses. Clay soils hold water well, which is why this is good pond country — and why drainage problems here are stubborn.
