The ground in and around Mont Belvieu

Mont Belvieu sits on a salt dome, which is the reason for the enormous underground hydrocarbon storage complex beneath and around the city and for much of the local economy. The surface is coastal prairie, slightly higher than the ground toward the bay, with clay soils typical of the county.
