More of our calls start with standing water than with anything else. Flat ground, clay that will not perc, a high water table, and forty to sixty inches of rain a year is a combination that makes drainage the defining land problem of this region.

Surface drainage comes first

Before anyone sells you pipe, the surface needs to be right. Water has to have a continuous path downhill to an outlet. On ground this flat, that path often has to be cut — a shallow swale or a graded ditch with consistent fall. It does not take much fall, but it has to be continuous. One flat section or one high spot and the whole run backs up. This is unglamorous work and it solves more problems than any buried system.

Where the water is going to go

This is the question that determines whether a drainage job is possible. Every system needs a legal outlet: a roadside ditch, a county drainage ditch, a creek, or a pond on your own property. You cannot simply discharge onto a neighbor's land, and doing so creates liability. In many parts of Chambers and Jefferson County the outlet is a drainage district ditch, and connecting to it may require coordination with that district. We identify the outlet before designing anything.

Culverts, sizing, and the cost of getting it wrong

A culvert that is too small will not pass a heavy rain, so water backs up behind it and goes over the top — usually taking your driveway with it. Culverts also silt in and need occasional cleaning. Where a culvert crosses under a county road approach, the county typically specifies the size and requires a permit. Where it is entirely on your property, sizing is our call and we would rather go a size up than have you rebuild it.

French drains and subsurface work

A French drain — perforated pipe in a gravel trench, wrapped in fabric — handles subsurface water and is useful around foundations and in specific wet spots. On heavy clay it has real limits: clay does not deliver water to the pipe quickly, so a French drain in gumbo will underperform what people expect from it. We use them where they are appropriate and we will tell you when surface grading would serve you better for less money.

Common Questions

Why does water stand in my yard for days?

Almost always some combination of no fall, no outlet, and clay soil that does not absorb water downward. The fix is establishing a graded path to somewhere the water can legally go. It is usually less expensive than people expect and more effective than any product you can buy.

Can you connect my drainage to the road ditch?

Frequently yes, but roadside and drainage district ditches are not automatically available to connect to. Depending on the road and district, a permit or approval may be required. We will help identify who needs to be asked.

Is a French drain or a ditch better?

For volume, surface water, and cost, a graded ditch or swale wins nearly every time on ground like ours. A French drain is for situations where you cannot have an open channel or you are managing water in the soil profile rather than on the surface. On heavy clay, expect less from a French drain than the marketing suggests.

Will drainage work stop my house from flooding?

It will address water that ponds on your property and moves toward your structure. It will not protect you from regional flooding if you sit in a flood zone during a major rainfall or storm surge event. Check the flood layer on our service map to see which situation you are in.
